While you are really never too old to begin doing anything, learning to play the violin even at a reasonable level of performance takes years to develop. If you are diligent, focused and patient you can begin at any age. Probably the most important thing that will help you and your teacher before you begin is by figuring out what kind of music you want to play and any specific reasons (other than just wanting to learn).
